"Rent a car" means something different here
If you have hired a car in Spain or Florida, put that model out of your mind. In Bangladesh there is no desk, no keys and no paperwork about fuel policy. What is universally called rent a car is a vehicle supplied with a professional driver.
This is not a premium upgrade. It is simply how the market works, and there are good reasons for it: traffic conditions that reward local experience, an informal road culture that takes time to read, and an insurance and liability environment that makes self-drive impractical for visitors.
The practical implication is that when you compare providers, you are comparing drivers and reliability as much as vehicles.
The four ways car hire is sold
Almost every booking in Bangladesh falls into one of four shapes, and knowing which one you need is the first step to a sensible price.
- Fixed journey
- A defined A to B, such as an airport transfer or an intercity run. Quoted as one price for the journey. See airport transfers.
- Hourly
- A minimum number of hours with the car waiting between stops. Best for a few appointments in one part of a city. See hourly hire.
- Daily
- A block of hours and kilometres for the day, with extra hours at an agreed rate. The most common booking. See daily hire.
- Monthly
- A vehicle and named driver assigned for a month or longer at an agreed monthly figure. See monthly hire.
What determines the price
Five things, in roughly this order of importance.
- Vehicle class
- A saloon, an MPV, a microbus and an SUV are meaningfully different prices. Choose by passengers and luggage, not by aspiration.
- Duration and distance
- Hours booked, kilometres covered, and whether the journey leaves the base city.
- Whether it is one-way
- A one-way drop still means the driver and vehicle return. It is cheaper than a return, but not by half.
- Timing
- Overnight work, very early departures and peak seasons — Eid, winter holidays, wedding season — all affect availability and price.
- Waiting
- Time the vehicle spends waiting is a real cost. Good quotes include it explicitly rather than adding it later.
What should be included — and what usually is not
A properly quoted booking in Bangladesh normally includes the vehicle, the driver, fuel within the agreed area, and the driver's own costs on the journey. Tolls are usually included on fixed intercity routes and charged at cost elsewhere.
What is frequently not included, and is worth asking about explicitly: paid parking, travel outside the agreed area, hours beyond the booked block, and an overnight allowance for the driver if the trip involves staying away. None of these are unreasonable — but they should be stated up front rather than appearing at the end.

How to avoid being overcharged
- Do not book through your hotel by default
- Reception can arrange a car in minutes, but consistently above the market rate, and you get whichever vehicle happens to be outside.
- Get the price in writing before travel
- A WhatsApp message stating vehicle, route, timing, inclusions and price is enough. Verbal quotes at the kerb are where disputes come from.
- State your luggage honestly
- Most disputes on airport jobs start with a vehicle that was too small for the bags, agreed on the basis of an optimistic passenger count.
- Ask what happens if you are delayed
- A reasonable provider monitors flights and includes a waiting period. If nobody will tell you the waiting policy, that is informative.
How far ahead to book
For a routine city transfer, a day or two is usually enough. For an airport collection, at least a few days, and more if you are arriving from abroad on a busy flight.
For wedding season, the winter holiday period, Eid and anything involving a specific luxury vehicle, book weeks ahead. Availability, not price, is the constraint at those times.
If you are booking from overseas
