Rent a car with a driver in Sreemangal

In Sylhet or Dhaka you can manage without a vehicle. In Sreemangal you cannot, realistically. Lawachara National Park, Madhabpur Lake, the Nilkantha tea cabin and the estate roads themselves are all several kilometres apart on roads with no useful public transport.

The other reason is timing. Tea gardens are at their best very early, and the light through the estates in the first hour after sunrise is the reason photographers come. That is not a schedule any shared transport will serve.

Early start into the estates for the light, then Lawachara for a walk in the rainforest — it is one of the last remaining patches of semi-evergreen forest in the country and home to hoolock gibbons.

Madhabpur Lake in the middle of the day, the seven-layer tea at a cabin in town in the afternoon, and back out to the gardens for the evening light. A driver who knows the estate roads is the difference between doing that comfortably and spending the day lost on unmarked tracks.

Most of the accommodation people book around Sreemangal is not in the town. The resorts and estate bungalows sit out along the tea roads, several kilometres from anywhere, often down unlit lanes.

That is exactly why they are pleasant, and also why a car matters more here than the drive down would suggest. There is no useful transport out there after dark, and dinner, Lawachara and Madhabpur Lake are all separate journeys from wherever you are sleeping.
