This is the part that catches people out. A large proportion of Sylheti families abroad come from specific upazilas — Beanibazar, Golapganj, Bishwanath, Zakiganj, Kanaighat, Balaganj, Jagannathpur across the district line in Sunamganj — and the final few kilometres are often narrow, unsigned village roads.

Sylhet is a good touring base. Most of the well-known destinations sit within a two-hour radius, and the roads to them reward local knowledge — several are seasonal, and the approach to Jaflong and Bisnakandi in particular changes with the rains.

For a visit of several weeks, daily bookings stop making sense. Most families settle into a monthly car and driver arrangement: a vehicle assigned for the stay with one driver who learns the addresses, the school run, the daily visits and the weekend trips.
