Sylhet to Dhaka by car with a driver

This is the single most important thing about this route. Do not plan the departure from Sylhet — plan the arrival at the airport, then work backwards, then add margin.

Our standard guidance: be at Hazrat Shahjalal three hours before an international departure, allow up to seven hours for the drive, and add at least one hour of contingency for the N2. That frequently means a departure the night before or a very early morning start.

It sounds excessive until you have sat in a four-hour queue at Bhairab watching a check-in window close.

For early-morning departures out of Dhaka, many families travel down the evening before and stay near the airport. It costs a hotel night and removes almost all the risk.

Returning families frequently have more luggage than they arrived with. Confirm your case count when booking rather than assuming the vehicle that brought you up will take you back down.

The delays on this route are not evenly spread, which is why an average speed is a poor way to plan it. The open stretches through Habiganj and Brahmanbaria move well. The pressure points are the bridge crossings around Ashuganj and Bhairab, and then the approach into Dhaka itself.

That last part is the one people underestimate. You can cover two hundred kilometres in good time and then lose an hour and a half in the final twenty, because you have arrived at the edge of the city at the wrong moment.

This is the single reason we plan the departure backwards from your arrival time rather than forwards from when you would like to leave. If the arrival matters — a flight, a meeting, a wedding — the schedule is built to survive the Dhaka end, not the easy middle.
