Sylhet to Sreemangal by car with a driver

Roughly an hour and a quarter on a good road, running south-west out of Sylhet through Moulvibazar district. The landscape changes noticeably as you go — flat paddy giving way to the low hills and tea gardens around Sreemangal.

It is an easy day trip, but an overnight stay is much better if you want the early morning light in the estates, which is when the place is genuinely extraordinary.

Sreemangal's attractions are spread across a wide area of estate roads with no useful public transport — Lawachara, Madhabpur Lake, the gardens themselves.

Booking a car for the transfer alone is a false economy. Ask for a full day: the drive down, a day in the tea country, and the return. See Sreemangal.

October to March is the comfortable window for this drive and for the tea country itself. In the monsoon the road is fine but the estate tracks beyond it turn to mud, and the walk-in parts of a Sreemangal day become considerably less pleasant.

The early hours are the reason to be there. Mist sitting in the valleys between the estates burns off through the morning, and by eleven the light that makes the place worth photographing has gone flat.

One thing worth understanding: the tea estates are working private property, not parks. Access varies from estate to estate and can change without notice. Your driver will know which approaches are usually open and where visitors are normally welcome, but neither he nor we can promise entry to a particular garden on a particular day.

It also combines well. Moulvibazar sits roughly on the way, and Lawachara is close enough to Sreemangal that both fit into the same day without rushing either. If you are heading back to Sylhet the same evening, plan the return for after the light has gone rather than cutting the afternoon short to beat the dark — the road is straightforward at night.
