Sunamganj is the wetland district: an enormous expanse of haor basin that becomes an inland sea in the monsoon and a landscape of paddy and open water channels in the dry season. It is the most seasonally variable place we operate, and the one where advice about timing matters most.
It is also, alongside Sylhet and Moulvibazar, one of the districts with the deepest British connection. Jagannathpur in particular sends and receives an enormous amount of traffic to and from the UK.
Season changes everything here
In the monsoon and immediately after — roughly June to October — the haors are full, the landscape is spectacular, and a good deal of travel is by boat rather than road. Some road approaches become impassable and journey times lengthen considerably.
In the dry season the roads are easier but the haors are drained and the famous water landscapes are gone. Tell us when you are travelling and what you want to see, and we will tell you honestly what is realistic rather than selling you a day that will disappoint.
Vehicle choice
This is the district where we most firmly recommend a Executive 4x4. Ground clearance is not a comfort question in Sunamganj — rural roads flood, surfaces break up and village approaches are often unsurfaced.
Where a journey ends at a boat rather than a house, we plan the road leg to the jetty and confirm where the vehicle waits.
Family visits to Jagannathpur and beyond
Jagannathpur, Dirai, Chhatak and Bishwamvarpur account for most of our family work here. As elsewhere in the region, the practical detail that matters is the last few kilometres.
Send us the village, the union and the nearest bazaar. If you have a relative locally who knows the approach, put us in touch — five minutes on the phone before the journey saves an hour on it.
Where the road ends
Sunamganj is the part of our coverage where a car is genuinely only half the journey. Beyond a certain point in the haor country the road stops and the water starts, and for a good part of the year that boundary moves.
For Tanguar Haor and the wetland villages, the practical arrangement is a vehicle to the launch point and a boat from there. Boats are arranged locally and separately from us — we will tell you honestly where the road ends and what the usual arrangement is, rather than quoting you for something we do not provide.
What the driver does do is wait, which matters more than it sounds. A vehicle waiting at the ghat when you come back off the water at dusk, in a place with no other transport, is the whole reason to book rather than improvise.

When is the best time to visit Tanguar Haor?
The monsoon and the weeks after it, roughly July to October, when the haor is full. In the dry season the water landscape largely disappears, so time the trip deliberately.
What vehicle do I need for Sunamganj?
An SUV for anything rural or seasonal. Road surfaces and flooding make ground clearance a practical requirement here rather than a preference.

Around 65 km to Sunamganj town, typically an hour and a half to two hours depending on conditions and the exact destination.
